SAA’s new baggage policy

SAA’s new baggage policy has kicked in which moves it in line with many other airlines around the world. Historically SAA only has a weight policy of 23kg

However from now on, excess baggage, additional items or extra weight are charged at a flat rate, per rule broken and per piece of luggage. Previously extra weight was charged per kilogramme.

Passengers flying within South Africa are allowed one suitcase of 23kg in economy class and business class passengers are allowed one bag at 32kg.

For international or regional flights to Africa, Europe and Australia/New Zealand economy class passengers are allowed one piece at 23kg and business class are allowed two pieces at 32kg. Between Africa and the USA/Canada, business class has the same limit and economy class passengers are allowed two bags of 23kg each. But remember, you cannot take more than 23kg (economy) on flights within South Africa so if you bring more bags, you may need to arrange luggage storage.

Also remember that if you are taking any internal charter flights, the limit is typically 20kg in small soft squashy bags. This may be a challenge as it may clash with the need to only bring one bag on the international flight. So we recommend discussing your baggage needs with your Cedarberg consultant and arranging for baggage storage if you need it.
